Allegory Bar, DC - Branding Session with Larry Olea from the Champagne Bar at the Surf Club in Miami.
Denniss and I recently had a spontaneous branding session for his brother, Larry, who was doing a pop-up at the Allegory Bar in DC. Check out the Allegory Bar if you're in the metro DC area or visiting. It's a speakeasy-style bar in the Eaton, with fantastic drinks and a laid-back and eccentric ambiance that I enjoyed.
Despite being exhausted from saying goodbye to Denniss's other brother earlier that day, who had come to run the Army 10 Miler with Denniss and our son Evan, I couldn't resist seeing Larry in action. He's one of my favorite people on the planet- and a Lead Bartender for the Champagne Bar at the Surf Club on Miami Beach. He's been traveling to different bars this year to showcase the Champagne Bar to various audiences. As a Miami native, I encourage you to visit the Surf Club for a cocktail if you're ever in Maimi. And if you're lucky enough to be served by my brother-in-law, please let me know.
So when Larry asked if we could bring our camera to take photos of him working, wild horses couldn't keep us away. We were excited to document Larry's style and personality and showcase his talent as a bartender in such an inspiring location.
The vibe I was going for with my photos was analog and film- because - in full transparency- this was not really planned, and I had no desire to bug guests at the bar with a flash. Ultimately, I had one goal, and that was to capture Larry's expertise in the field and his unique personality in a sort of messy off the cuff way. The Allegory Bar provided the perfect backdrop and the advanced culinary and molecular techniques used in the cocktails made for some stunning visuals and they were really good. Trust me, I think I drank like two of each on the menu that night.
